Are You A Clixby?  I don't think there are many of us, as far as I know, I'm the only 'Tim Clixby' in the world.

It certainly is a conversation starter:

"That's an unusual name", "I haven't heard of that one before", "Could you spell that for me?", all common replies lol.

But I don't mind having to spell my name for anyone :)

Hey, we're mentioned in the Doomsday Book!  There's even a Clixby village in Lincolnshire, England, UK.  I've found out recently that Clixby Village is actually older than Liverpool in the UK.  Clixby village was listed in the Doomsday book which was written in 1086AD, Liverpool was founded in 1207AD.  Impressive hey?

There is a tiny church located in Clixby, blink and you will miss it.

bulletIn 1871, the church was a small building, comprising only the chancel of the original church.
bulletThe church was restored in 1889. It seats approximately 128 people.

Family Tree

I've (When I say 'I' I actually mean my Auntie has done 99% of the work, and I've added bits!) traced our Clixby family tree right back to the 1600's, pretty impressive stuff.  Not very imaginative with the names, most of my grandfathers were called John or William.

As my Clixby family tree is very complete, I've made a start on my mothers side, Carter.  Is not such an unusual name, so tracing it back is more challenging.  There are some great resources available for tracing your family tree.  Some are free, others you have to pay for, I was surprised at how much it can vary.

Ancestry.co.uk - It's not free, but it is bar far the best resource, and VERY comprehensive.
National Archives - There are some free articles and great reference materials.
Ordering Certificates - I'd seen prices starting around £20 or more, but after much looking, I've found the source and they are approx £7 each.

I've used the services above to get back now to the 1700's.  I became stuck with my Great Great Grandfather, 'Squire Carter'.  I've just ordered his birth certificate, hoping that it will give me a clue to his parents.  Usually the census records make it very easy to trace people, but as I got back to 1881, he was listed living with step-parents, neither of them having the surname Carter.

Our interesting and unusual surname is of English locational origin from a place thus called north west of Caistor in Lincolnshire. Recorded variously as Clisbi in the Domesday Book of 1086, as Clipsebi in the 1196 Pipe Rolls of Lincolnshire and as Clixeby in the 1275 Hundred Rolls of that county, the place was so called from the old Norse personal name Klyppr, adopted as "Clip" in Old English, plus the Old Norse "by", a homestead or settlement; hence, "Clip's by".

The surname is particularly well recorded in church registers of Lincolnshire from the late 16th Century, under the variant spellings Clixbye, Clixbie, Cliksbie etc..  The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Richard Clixby, (christening), which was dated October 14th 1573, Winterton, Lincolnshire, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1st. How cool is that?  I'm still searching for another 'Tim Clixby'...

How To Start Your Family Tree

It sounds obvious, but you'd be amazed at how many people dont think of it.... ask your family.  I was able to get back quite far quite quickly asking uncles and aunts etc.  Once you get back to about 1901, census records are available.  From census records, collected every 10 years, it becomes pretty easy....  After census records, birth, death and marriage certificates are the way to go.

The national archives are a great place to look for the 'extra information'.  They list medals that may have been awarded during wars etc, even copies of wills, very interesting.  My grandfather, Charles Stanley Carter was awarded an M.B.E. something I'm very proud of.

I add to this page fairly often, so please check back, and feel free to ask me any questions at all... Good luck!
